Brumby Government Support for Bushfire Volunteers

Wednesday, 18 March 2009

Volunteering organisations in bushfire-affected communities across Victoria will share in a Brumby Government funding boost of $420,000 as they continue their work supporting local volunteers.

In the Yarra Valley today as part of the Brumby Government’s Community Cabinet, Community Development Minister Peter Batchelor said 19 projects had been funded under the Bushfire Relief Volunteer Grants program.

“The Brumby Government is committed to supporting the survivors of these devastating fires, and to supporting the fantastic efforts of those volunteers who are providing much-needed help to the thousands who have been affected,” Mr Batchelor said.

“Victoria’s amazing volunteers have offered their help without asking for any payment, but we’re pleased to offer this flexible funding that can be used by organisations to meet their immediate needs – whatever it takes to help volunteers get their important jobs done on the ground.”

Mr Batchelor said the Brumby Government was also developing ways of supporting the rebuilding of both infrastructure and social networks to help communities rebuild.

“More volunteers will be needed down the track to assist with long-term recovery and rebuilding – we simply won’t be able to do it without them,” he said.

Mr Batchelor said the additional funding was available to volunteer organisations working in bushfire affected communities and that the grants could cover a range of costs including training, personal support and out-of-pocket expenses of volunteers such as travel, food and accommodation.

“Volunteers are working around the clock to help these communities and we are going to give them the support they need,” Mr Batchelor said.

“Community organisations can apply immediately for up to $5000 in funding from the Volunteer Small Grants – Bushfire Relief 2009 program

“The Victorian Government will also provide funding of up to $20,000 from the Emergency Volunteer Support Grants – Bushfire Relief 2009 program to larger volunteer organisations in areas affected by the bushfires.”
