Study scholorships for bushfire affected Victorians

Monday, 26 October 2009

The Brumby Labor Government has announced a $200,000 scholarship program for bushfire affected Victorians who need skills training to gain re-employment.

Announcing the package at the Community Cabinet in the Yarra Ranges, Skills and Workforce Participation Minister Jacinta Allan said the Brumby Labor Government was standing up for bushfire affected communities by ensuring people whose jobs were affected by bushfires had access to training for re-employment.

“The Black Saturday bushfires devastated many businesses. Victorians living in these communities may wish to re-skill to and gain other employment,” Ms Allan said.

“The scholarships are part of the Brumby Labor Government’s commitment to provide a training place for all Victorians so they can secure jobs for the future.”

Ms Allan said the skills training scholarships would also help bushfire affected Victorians who were in the process of helping their communities rebuild.

“There will no doubt be demand for skills relating to revegetating, fencing, road building and signage as bushfire affected Victorians help rebuild their communities,” Ms Allan said.

Ms Allan said the scholarships complemented the government’s reforms to Victoria’s skills training system that allow job seekers to study for free and concession card holders to pay no more than $120 for a certificate level qualification.

“The Brumby Labor Government will continue to invest in the skills of Victorians so they can have jobs both now and into the future,” Ms Allan said.
