Middle Kinglake Primary School to be rebuilt

Friday, 13 February 2009

Marysville, Strathewen and Middle Kinglake primary schools all destroyed in the Victorian bushfires will be rebuilt, Premier John Brumby announced today.

The school principals, school community and Department of Education and Early Childhood Development officials have already started planning and preparations for the rebuilding the of three schools.

Mr Brumby said the rebuilding of fire affected areas would start with community hubs such as schools.

“Schools are at the heart of small communities and are places where families and friends gather,” he said.

“These three towns have suffered devastating losses and rebuilding these schools will help reconnect the local community and provide some normality for the many children who have lost their homes.

“Planning has already begun, in consultation with the local communities so construction can start as soon as possible.

“This is the worst natural disaster Australia has ever faced and we have a massive task of rebuilding communities and providing new schools and infrastructure to those affected.

“This will be an important part in our road to recovery.”

The Acting Minister for Education and Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development, Maxine Morand, praised the principals and their teams at the three schools for supporting students and families during these tragic times.

“These principals and teachers have suffered personal loss and yet they have focused their attention on rebuilding their local school communities,” Ms Morand said.

“Even though their schools are destroyed, they have been there for their students and their families.

“Their sense of community spirit and determination to rebuild lives, schools and communities has been inspiring and we will be doing everything we can to support them.”
