Flowerdale Primary School, with its unique design, is a small country school, which nestles in the North East Hills eighty kilometres from Melbourne.
The Flowerdale School Community is committed to providing a happy and secure environment for all children to reach their maximum potential. Within the school, systems exist to develop cooperation, teamwork and responsible attitudes. These include a house system with house captains, school captains, a Student Representative Council and an Animal Welfare Committee to take care of the schools animals.
All students are encouraged to participate in the decision making processes at the school through these committees at some stage. The implementation of the You Can Do It program and a well developed Welfare Policy ensures that students are encouraged to be responsible for their own behaviour and to develop conflict resolution skills. Building self esteem and confidence is an important aspect of this process.
Curriculum at Flowerdale Primary School refers to the total education of students and includes planned and incidental learning, whether it is academic, social or physical. The eight key learning areas as prescribed by the Department of School Education being English, Mathematics, The Arts, Science, Technology, Studies of Society and the Environment, Physical and Health Education and Languages Other Than English (L.O.T.E.), are timetabled for all students.
Students work in composite grades, however, the flexibility of time tabling allows for regrouping when the need arises. The Mobile Area Resource Centre provides further resources for all curriculum areas and an additional library program. The Mobile Art and Craft Centre provides fortnightly lessons for the children.
The wider community provides extra resources and expertise in areas such as craft, assisting oral reading, music, and planning and helping with special festival days and cluster days which follow a whole school theme. Transition programs from kindergarten to primary school and from primary school to high school are well established and constantly reviewed.
Flowerdale Primary School has an Early Intervention reading program and employs a special needs teacher and a speech therapist to assist students with learning difficulties.
The school has a classroom computer network, which links us to the World Wide Web and provides students with up to date learning technology.
The buildings and grounds are the centre of many community activities. The well designed central administration block and classrooms enclose a central courtyard, with large under cover areas generating feelings of warmth and protection.
Flowerdale Primary School is a Sun Smart School with attractive native and cottage gardens. A variety of well maintained areas such as the basketball court, oval, adventure playground and sandpit allow for diversification of play and harmony.
Flowerdale Primary School is committed to ensuring that students develop a positive attitude towards their education.
